The Youth Sport Trust’s Girls Active Survey supports schools to gain student insight through an online survey to understand the participation levels, attitudes, motivations and barriers to participation. Registration for the Girls Active survey is now closed. The Youth Sport Trust have been conducting a Girls Active Survey since 2016, finding out what the barriers, motivations and perceptions are for girls in PE, physical activity and sport, both in and outside of school and how these differ to boys. This report summarises responses to the Girls Active Pre-Intervention Questionnaire that female pupils completed in June 2022. Overall this study received 6653 responses from female pupils in school years 7 to 13, from all schools. Please note: This report only contains responses from female pupils.
Data released today by Women in Sport and the Youth Sport Trust shows a shocking gender divide in attitudes towards physical activity for secondary school aged children. The survey involved 25,000 girls and boys from 138 schools across England and Northern Ireland.The recently published 'Girls Active Survey' by the Youth Sport Trust has highlighted a concerning trend – the gap between boys' and girls' enjoyment of PE has considerably widened over the past seven years. The survey found that only 64% of girls find PE enjoyable, compared to 85% of boys.The Girls Active programme developed by the Youth Sport Trust and delivered in partnership with This Girl Can and Women in Sport, involves girls in the design and delivery of PE and physical activity in secondary schools.The Girls Active programme comprises a one-day training for secondary teachers, hard-copy and electronic resources, self-reviews, insight surveys and reports, seed funding to support actions and ongoing support.
In partnership with The Confidence Code for Girls, Ypulse conducted a nationwide quantitative online survey of 1394 8-18-year-olds and their parents/guardians. Participants were recruited from Ypulse’s proprietary SurveyU community. The survey was fielded between 2/8/18 and 2/13/18.Girls Active is a national initiative and schools across England will be completing the survey at the same time. We will use the responses from all schools to write a national report about girls’ participation, attitudes, motivations and barriers to taking part in PE, sport and physical activity.
